30-FUL Marzilibahn

Explanation

Since 1885, Marzilibahn has been the shortest route from the Bern railway station to the River Area (River Aare) and the Marzilibad swimming facility. Funiküler Bernese constitutes an integral part of the city’s appearance and carries more than a million passengers a year with its great popularity and shortest route. The passengers expect maximum comfort.

Now Marzilibahn is unobstructed and visitors can wander around the wider doors made during the renovation of their cabin. Optimized passenger flows have positively impacted capacity and number of users.

The funicular route was built on an unstable slope and was subject to deterioration over the years. The road infrastructure, constructed on the basis of steel bridge construction, has been completely altered, to be part of the hand-over work, put on the road again by Garaventa experts. In order to meet the requirements of the Mass Transit System, the entire sub-terminal has been reconstructed.

Until 1974, Marzilibahn became a water-balancing system by placing a tank filled with 3,500 liters of water, taken from a subdivision of the local Stadtbach, under the passenger compartment in the upper terminal. The heavier upper cabin was then brought downward, pulling the lower cabin up the hill. The funicular was electrified in 1979. The initial cabins are still in use. One is located on the side of the sub terminal and the other is on display at the Swiss Transport Museum in Lucerne.
